Back to school feels like a mini season in itself. It brings up different emotions depending on the person. We’re fortunate that our kids love school, so for them it’s all excitement. But my wife ran cross country, and for her, back to school always came with butterflies — knowing races were about to start again.
Most of us probably have something like that. A feeling this time of year stirs up, even if we’re long past school ourselves.
But here’s the question for each of us, it’s an opportunity to go back to — what?
Maybe it’s back to the basics of the faith. Maybe it’s back to a prayer routine that got out of whack over the summer. Maybe it’s eating habits, or exercise, or simply the rhythm of ordinary life that the craziness of summer disrupted. There are moments throughout the year that offer us a chance to start fresh. New Year’s is the obvious one. But this is another.
At my graduate school graduation, Philip Rivers — the longtime NFL quarterback — shared two words: Nunc Coepi. Latin for: Now I begin.
The reminder is simple. Every day, we have the chance to begin again. Summer is closing. Fall is here. Now is as good a moment as any.
